A native of Nottingham, England, city of Robin Hood. Resident in Tokyo since 1973, and in Ryogoku, the sumo heartland, since 1978; former Classics teacher, now works directly and indirectly for the Japanese government. To keep sane, devotes much (but not all) of her spare time to an intensive study of sumo. Has written a bimonthly sumo column for the Kobe-based magazine ‘Kansai Time Out’ since 1983, and has been appearing regularly as a color commentator on NHK’s 2-hour live satellite telecasts since 1992, when the service started. Wrote regularly for ‘Sumo World’ magazine for about ten years; as a feature writer has been published in the Okura Lantern, Asian Art, etc. Has been interviewed for the BBC, National Public Radio and other radio and TV broadcasters.
Note: Ms. Simmons was awarded the Orders of the Rising Sun---(Kyokujitsusho, 旭日章)---by the Japanese government in 2017. She died in April 2018.
